Yankees ST Battles

LF: Xavier Nady vs. Nick Swisher     Nady should be the clear winner here

CF: Nick Swisher vs. Brett Gardner vs. Melky Cabrera    Gardner is going to be a huge asset to this team. Swisher will not be happy about this.

Utility IF: Cody Ransom vs. Angel Berroa     Ransom has more power and can play the corners giving him an advantage.

4th OF: Nick Swisher vs. Melky Cabrera: Melky can come in for defense for Nady/Damon. That givers him an advantage because we already have Ransom's bat on the bench. You don't need Swisher's

Bullpen Strength confusion Spots 4-7: Edwar Ramirez vs. Jose Veras vs. Phil Coke vs. Mark Melancon vs. David Robertson vs. Jon Albaladejo vs. Dan Giese vs. Steven Jackson vs. Phil Hughes vs. Ian Kennedy vs. Jason Johnson vs. Humberto Sanchez vs. Brett Tomko vs. Alfredo Aceves.     Edwar will have a dominant year and will be there. Coke will be there based off last year's stats. Veras will not have a great year, but it will be good enough to guarantee him a spot. I would give the last spot to Humberto, but in wake of the latest injury news I am giving it to David Robertson who will tie Melancon for the spot. Robertson gets advantage in ties. Albaladejo and Giese could be traded with potentially Miranda. Steven Jackson is already 27. He could be up very soon. Hughes and Kennedy won't really compete for the spots. They will be in AAA with Tomko, Aceves, and Jason Johnson. Eric Milton will be cut for this to happen.

25th man: Angel Berroa vs. Nick Swisher vs. Juan Miranda vs. Frank Cervelli vs. Mark Melancon vs. Dan Giese vs. Jon Albaladejo vs. Steven Jackson vs. Phil Hughes vs. Ian Kennedy vs. Jason Johnson vs. Humberto Sanchez vs. Brett Tomko vs. Alfredo Aceves    I have to go with Berroa here. He will man the MI and Ransom the CI. Unfortunately, the Yankees IF is so strong that they may not need both of them unless Berroa come in for defense. Ransom is more of a pinch hitter. Although he is the better player they may not need him. As I mentioned before several of these may be traded.

Notable Players not on roster: Juan Miranda, John Rodriguez, Justin Leone, Eric Milton, Doug Bernier, Jason Brown, Kevin Cash, Nick Swisher, Mark Melancon, Dan Giese, Jon Albaladejo, Steven Jackson, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Jason Johnson, Humberto Sanchez, Brett Tomko, Alfredo Aceves, Shelley Duncan and prospects, Jesus Montero, Austin Jackson, Andrew Brackman, Austin Romine, Wilkins de la Rosa, Michael Dunn, Colin Curtis, PJ Pillitere, Kevin Russo, Ramiro Pena, Eduardo Nunez, JB Cox, George Kontos, Kanekoa Texeira, Eric Hacker, Chris Garcia, Anthony Claggett, Kyle Andon, and Kei Igawa.

Jorge Posada, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Xavier Nady, Johnny Damon, Brett Gardner, Hideki Matsui  Cody Ransom, Angel Berroa, Jose Molina, Malky Cabrera

Red Sox ST Battles

The Red Sox are a team with hardly any battles. Now that the Red Sox chose Julio Lugo over Jed Lowrie, they really don't need too many other things to decide.

5th OF of 8th bullpen man: Brad Wilkerson vs. Billy Traber vs. Fernando Cabrera     I have to go with Wilkerson here so they have someone to backup first base. Traber will come up at some point

Notable players not on roster: Nick Green, Billy Traber, Fernando Cabrera, Wes Littleton, Marcus McBeth, Enrique Gonzalez, Devern Hansack, Jeff Bailey, Chris Carter, Lars Anderson, Jonathon Van Every, Paul McAnulty, Ivan Ochoa, Gil A. Velazquez, Chip Ambres, George Kottaras

Out until early June: John Smoltz

Out until early May: Mark Kotsay

Jason Varitek, Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, Julio Lugo, Mike Lowell, David Ortiz, Jason Bay, Jacoby Ellsbury, J. D. Drew       Josh Bard, Jed Lowrie, Brad Wilkerson, Rocco Baldelli

Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester, Tim Wakefield, Brad Penny     Jonathan Papelbon, Javier Lopez, Justin Masterson, Ramon Ramirez, Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, Clay Bucholz

Orioles ST Battles

I really think this Orioles team is so bad is might get about 45 wins.  Sherrill will be one of the only bright spots with a low ERA and maybe 20-25 saves.

Starters 2-5: Koji Uehara vs. Rich Hill vs. Brad Hennessey vs. Mark Hendrickson vs. Danys Baez vs. David Pauley vs. Troy Patton vs. Hayden Penn vs. Radhames Lee vs. Chris Waters vs. Chris Tillman vs. Matt Albers vs. Jake Arrieta      I really have no idea what to make of this. I guess Rich Hill and MArk Hendrickson will make it. Baez might be in the pen. Penn is the 4th guy for me. I like Albers and Liz but they might have to go to the pen. Hennessey will be the last guy edging out Uehara.

Main IF reserve: Chris Gomez vs. Ty Wigginton vs. Ryan Freel      Gomez won't make it. Wigginton will be the main IF. Freel might play some OF.

Matt Wieter's assignment: MLB starter, reserve of AAA starter.   If he does go to AAA then Chad Moeller, Guillermo Quiroz, and Robby Hammock. Moeller has a big advantage.

Main OF: Justin Christian vs. Luis Montanez    Christian has a huge speed advantage, but Montanez has a nice bat. Christian will get the job to start the year.

7th Relief Pitcher: Radhames Liz vs. Jim Hoey vs. John Parrish vs. Matt Albers vs. vs. Alberto Castillo vs. Danys Baez vs. starting pitcher scrubs      I definitely have to got with Danys Baez just over Radhames Liz. Others will get chances with injuries like every year.

Non Roster makers: Chad Moeller, Robby Hammock, Chris Gomez, Koji Uehara, David Pauley, Guillermo Quiroz, Troy Patton, Chris Waters, Chris Tillman, Matt Albers, Jake Arrieta, Luis Montanez, Chris Gomez, Jim Hoey, John Parrish, Alberto Castillo, Rob McCrory, Kam Mickolio, Wilfrido Perez, Brian Bass, Oscar Salazar, Alfredo Simon

Matt Wieters, Aubrey Huff, Brian Roberts, Cesar Izturis, Melvin Mora, Luke Scott, Felix Pie, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis      Ryan Freel, Greg Zaun, Ty Wigginton, Justin Christian

Jeremy Guthrie, Rich Hill, MArk Hendrickson, Brad Hennessey, Hayden Penn              George Sherrill, Chris Ray, Jamie Walker, Danys BAez, Dennis Sarfate, Jim Miller, Jim Johnson

Rays ST Battles

4th OF: Gabe Gross vs. Gabe Kapler vs. Justin Ruggiano vs. Fernando Perez    All of these guys are vauble options. I think they'll choose one of the veterans and keep the younger guys in the minors. Gross is the choice.

Utility IF: Morgan Ensberg vs. Willy Aybar vs. Ben Zorbist vs. Elliot Johnson   Aybar should win this job, but Zorbist is still a viable option for 25th man.

Backup catcher: John Jaso vs. Shawn Riggans vs. Michael HErnandez. It's good to have JAso in the minors. Right now Riggans is my man.

25th man: John Jaso vs. Gabe Kapler vs. Justin Ruggiano vs. Fernando Perez vs. Elliot Johnson vs. Ben Zorbist   I go with Ben Zorbist here because the pen is so set that every player in the pen already knows what position they hold. The OFs will wait in the minors for now. Elliot Johnson can, too. Jaso is a catcher and I do not see a team carrying 3 catcher when the starter doesn't have an injury problem.

Notable players not on roster: John Jaso, Gabe Kapler, Justin Ruggiano, Fernando Perez, Elliot Johnson, Morgan Ensberg, Jeff Niemann, Michael Hernandez, Randy Choate, Lance Cormier, Julio DePaula, Chad Orvella, Mitch Talbott, and first rounder Timothy Beckham

Dioner Navarro, Carlos Pena, Akinora Iwamura, Jason Bartlett, Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford, Pat Burrell, B. J. Upton, Matt Joyce,   Willy Aybar, Ben Zorbist, Shawn Riggans, Gabe Gross.

David Price, Andy Sonnastine, Scott Kazmir, Matt Garza, Jamie Shields                    Troy Percival, Dan Wheeler, Grant Balfour, J. P. Howell, Brian Shouse, Jason Hammel, Joe Nelson

One argument that can be made for another OF is that in my other anlysis, I wanted a player that had the ability to play centerfield other than the starter. I am banking that Crawford can in emergency for less than 9 innings. PErez or Kapler would get the call up in an Upton injury next day.

I see the Rays doing extremely well this year.  They have an extremely strong bench, rotation, and hitters. The pen is above average.

White Sox ST Battles

The White Sox are going to struggle to start the year. They will have a good 2nd half, but it won't be enough.

CF: Dewayne Wise vs. Brian Anderson vs. Jerry Owens   According to the fantasy leagues Wise has the lead. This would make no sense to me. Anderson is not going to win it so I would have gone with Jerry Owens. IS there something I am missing here. JErry Owens is the one who hasn't failed yet.

4th and 5th SP: Bartolo Colon vs. Lance Broadway vs. Clayton Richard vs. Aaron Pordea vs. Jeff Marquez.  Marquez has good potential, but won't be in the MLB until August. Pordea was a first round pick ,but likely won't be heavily competing either. Lance Broadway has a high ERA, but I think he will get one spot. Richard has a high ERA as well and a bad record. The two will fight it out in the spring. Colon and Broadway get it.

7th RP: Ehren Wassermann vs. Clayton Richard vs. Kelvin Jimenez vs. John Van Benschoten vs. Franklyn German vs. Many minor league options   I would got with Richard just over Wassermann here.

Back up Catcher: Chris Stewart vs. Tyler Flowers vs. Corky Miller and his .083 AVG... I really don't know who to choose here. Chris Stewart might be the only option.

I'll assume the two losers of the CF job will both make it.

Notable players not on roster: Ben Broussard, Dayan Viciedo, Brent Lillibridge, Tler Flowers, Corky Miller, First Rounders Aaron Pordea and Gordon Beckham, Jeff Marquez, Franklyn German, John Van Benschoten, Ehren Wassermann,  Brad Salmon, Jhonny Nunez, Kelvin Jimenez, Jayson Nix

15 Day DL: Ryan Z. Braun     60 Day DL: Jose Contreras

A. J. Pierzynski, Paul Konerko, Alexei Casilla, Chris Getz, Josh Fields, Carlos Quentin, Jerry Owens, Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome    Wilson Betemit, Chris Stewart, Brian Anderson, DeWayne Wise

Mark Buehrle, Gavin Floyd, John Danks, Bartolo Colon, Lance Broadway      Bobby Jenks, Ocatavio Dotel, Scott Linebrink, Matt Thorton, D. J. Carasco, Mike M. MacDougal, Clayton Richard

This team looks really weak at 2B and CF with young players destines to struggle at SS and 3B. They don't have a reliable backup catcher. Their bench is good, but Betemit might be the best power hitter even though Wise isn't terrible. The bullpen is one of the few bright spots. I think the hole will be too deep. They will finish 3rd. They will switch spots with the Tigers at the end.

Tigers ST Battles

I am really skeptical of Carlos Guillen in LF, but I will give this a shot.

Utility IF: Ryan Raburn vs. Ramon Santiago. I really have to give this to Raburn. He played a bit more last year than Santiago. Raburn's bat is much worse, but I think he will be just a smidge ahead.

5th SP: Dontrelle Willis vs. Nate Robertson vs. Zach Miner. Willis will get this if he shows anything in spring. Too bad he won't so I am giving it to Robertson.

Closer: Fernando Rodney vs. Brandon Lyon. I absolutely love Lyon and have the utmost confidence in him. It is his job to lose.

5th, 6th, 7th relief pitchers: Dontrelle Willis vs. Zach Miner vs. Freddy Dolsi vs. Scott Williamson vs. Clay Rapada vs. Juan Rincon      Seriously do you think Williamson is going to ever make an MLB team let alone an AAA team. Willis has to find a spot even though he is beyond repair. The Tigers gave up Cameron Maybin for this guy. Juan Rincon and Zach Miner could get the other spots I guess. Eventually Dolsi will beat out Rincon.

25th Man: Clete Thomas vs. Juan Rincon vs. Ramon Santiago vs. Jeff Larish vs. Scott Williamson vs. Clay Rapada vs. Mike Hessman vs. Timo Perez vs. Bronson Sardinha (Yes the last two have ZERO CHANCE) Larish really could get this job. HE is really good, but I think Clete Thomas will get it b/c Guillen, Ordonez, Thames, and Sheffield cannot play center in an emergency.

Notable players not on roster: Juan Rincon, Ramon Santiago, JEff Larish, Scott Williamson, Clay Rapada, Mike Hessman, Bronson Sardinha, Timo Perez

Gerald Laird, Miguel Cabrera, Placido Polanco, Adam Everett, Brandon Inge, Curtis Granderson, Magglio Ordonez, Gary Sheffield  Marcus Thames, Matt Treanor, Ryan Raburn, Clete Thomas

Jeremy Bonderman, NAte Robertson, Justin Verlander, Andreas Gallarga, Edwin Jackson        Brandon Lyon, Fernando Rodney, Joel Zumaya, Bobby Seay, Freddy Dolsi, Dontrelle Willis, Zach Miner

This Tiger team has many ranging expectations from 1st to last in their division. I do not think they have a chance at first, but any other spot is possible. Their offense will be really good and so will their bench, but they have questions in the bullpen and some rotation questions where injuries are possible and where players are bound to struggle. The defensive alignment is spotty, but I guess I'll just have to trust Leyland with that. There is a huge drop off after the first 5 spots inthe Batting order. I don't trust Laird. Everett is not a very offensive player. I would put Guillen at short and start Thames. Sheffield and Inge have a low AVG.

Twins ST Battles

The Twins are looking to be a very good team, and they only have a couple of battles.

Utility IF: Brian Buscher vs. Matt Tolbert vs. Matt Macri   Like every team, utility IF is a battle. Macri is the most versatile, but Buscher is the best of them so he gets the nod.

5th, 6th, and 7th bullpen men:  Boof Bonser vs. Phillip Humber vs. Kevin Mulvey vs. Jason Jones vs. Bobby Korecky vs. Brian Duensing vs. Ben Julianel vs. R.A. Dickey vs. Sean Henn vs. Mike Gosling     I would bet anything Bonser would be here if he is not traded. Phillip Humber is major league ready, but I cannot see him getting this job. Kevin Mulvey is not on the 40 man roster so will not get it. Jason Jones likely could, but would have to return to the Yankees if he doesn't. Could very well be the long reliever. Bobby Korecky has some exp. in the pen so he would also get in. R.A. Dickey has the knuckleball so for him to be a reliever than they'd have to have Mauer be able to catch it. Julianel probably won't get in. Henn is a good lefty, but I don't know if he is in the top 7 based on Jones being forced to leave.

Last Man on roster: Sean Henn vs. Jason Pridie vs. Luis Matos vs. Matt Tolbert vs. Matt Macri vs. Kevin Mulvey vs. Phillip Humber vs. Brian Duesning vs. R.A. Dickey vs. Mike Gosling vs. Ben Julianel    I gave all the explanations for people not getting in on other battles so I am just going to give this to Henn ober Pridie.

Notable players not on team: Jason Pridie, Luis Matos, Matt Tolbert, Matt Macri, Kevin Mulvey, Phillip Humber, Brian Duesning, R.A. Dickey, Mike Gosling, Ben Julianel

Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Brendan Harris, Nick Punto, Alexi Casilla, Delmon Young, Carlos Gomez, Michael Cuddyer, Jason Kubel  Mike Redmon, Brian Buscher, Denard Span

Francisco Liriano, Glenn Perkins, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Nick Blackburn          Joe Nathan, Jesse Crain, Matt Guerrier, Craig Breslow, Bobby Korecky, Jason Jones, Boof Bonser, Sean Henn

Out for year: Pat Neshek

This is all assuming Mauer is ready for opening day

Royals ST battles

The Royals did a lot to help themselves this offseason so don't be surprised if they do well.

C: Joe Buck vs. Miguel Olivo    Joe Buck really needs to come through to keep his job. The Royals are getting serious about it now. I still like Buck, but they will split time.

Utility IF: Esteban German vs. Alberto Callapso vs. Luis Hernandez vs. Tony Pena vs. Willie Bloomquist  Callapso is the likely favorite of the group. Pena is a plus for defense and German is the veteran. I like Callapso to win this job. German can be traded. Hernandez and Pena are minor league depth. Bloomquist is oft injured.

4th OF: Shane Costa vs. Mitch Maier vs. Ross Gload vs. Tommy Murphy  Gload is an absolute beast. Costa didn't play last year just limiting his competition. Gload can't play all the OF positions, but CF and LF are already versatile and Teahan can move back.

5th SP: Brandon Duckworth vs. Luke Hocheaver vs. Horacio Ramirez     If Kyle Davis is a reliever that could make 2 of these guys make it. I think it will be just Hocheaver

7th RP: Devon Lowery vs. Franquelis Osoria vs. Joel Peralta vs. John Bale vs. Luke Hudson vs. Heath Phillips vs. Lenny DiNardo vs. Oscar Villareal vs. Neal Musser vs. Henry Barrera vs. Brandon Duckworth vs. Horacio Ramirez      I have to go with Villareal here even though the Royals won't. Good thing is that they have a lot of veterans in AAA in case of injury. The Royals will choose John Bale probably.

Last Player: Ryan Shealy vs. any of the other losers     His top competition is Mitch Maier, but I think he will beat him. Kila Ka'aihue could also be in this race.

Failed to make roster: JR House, Horacio Ramirez, Brandon Duckworth, Devon Lowery, Franquelis Osoria, Joel Peralta, Oscar Villareal, Luke Hudson, Heath Phillips, Lenny DiNardo, Neal Musser, Henry Barrera, Mitch Maier, Kila Ka'aihue, Shane Costa, Tony Pena, Luis Hernandez, Esteban German, Willie Bloomquist

John Buck, Mike Jacobs, Mark Teahan, Mike Aviles, Alex Gordon, David DeJesus, Coco Crisp, Jose Guillen, Billy Butler                 Miguel Olivo, Alberto Callapso, Ryan Shealy, Ross Gload

Gil Meche, Zack Grienke, Luke Hiocheaver, Kyle Davies, Brian Bannister           Joakim Soria, Kyle Farnsworth, Ron Mahay, Jimmy Gobble, Doug Waechter, Robinson Tejada, John Bale
